  • Day One of Chore Chart

So, I called my strike off temporarily last night. I explained to all of the kids that we would now be using a chore chart that would need to be checked off daily before television and computer privileges would be granted.

I headed out this morning not really sure how I wanted to create the chart, but knowing I needed a visual aid. My only requirement was inexpensive and reusable. I first thought about creating a calender for the wall, but realized that I wouldn't be able to easily make changes so that idea was done. I did consider the dry erase calender, but it was much larger than I needed. After looking all around the office supply area of my local Wal-Mart I decided on a small dry erase board. It is small enough to hang on the fridge and it was magnetic so I could move it to another location if the fridge proved not to be the best choice.

I kept it fairly simple and just put the week we were dealing with at the top. Under that went each child's name in order of age along with a brief description of the chore they would be responsible for that week. I made sure that I detailed just enough of the job so that there were no misconceptions of what was expected. I have heard too many times, "you didn't say cleaning the bathroom meant getting the wet towels out". I wanted it very clear what was included in the job.

My plan is to rotate the jobs each week so that no one person has the "easy" job. I also included a category for all the children as a whole. I expect each of them to keep their rooms neat, their clothes put neatly away, and dirty clothes to be taken to the laundry room. Again, if I don't specifically spell that out, I will hear at least one comment that they were unaware that was expected. This is not my first day at this rodeo.

Now, I am off to finish the laundry. Em's teacher is coming by later and I am just thrilled that I don't have to run around like crazy getting the house in order.

I will let you know how things are working out. I am open to any suggestions if you have something that works well in your family and want to pass it along.

that sound slike a great idea...don't you hate how when you go on strike you're just ITCHING to clean and ect?  it also happens when an appliance breaks too lol  as soon as the dishwasher breaks or washing machine you just can't tand but to wash clothes or this or that lol.

    good luck!!

"you didn't say cleaning the bathroom meant getting the wet towels out" - lol! so true...

If the chores stay the same, a friend of mine had a great way to keep track with her roommates.

They made a wheel.  Each section of the wheel had the chore for the week.  (I think they had one free spot!)  The names were on popsicle sticks (or something along those lines - it may just have been a piece of paper, I dont remember!).  Each week the names only had to be rotated.  You always know what your chore for that week is - and what the next week will be!  Very similar to what you have already done.

I hope it works!  *crosses fingers*

I am going to set up a chore chart as well. Haha. I don't have but one kid and he can't really do chores yet, but I do get him to clean up his mess when he makes it, I figure that is a start. I just find it funny I have to make a chore chart for two GROWN men. Lol.

I hope the chart works out for you!

I think that's a great idea, every house should have something like that.  It's not fair to ask you to be Superwoman!  :)
