  • Holidays

Much like everyone else, we are gearing up for Thursday. My only job is to cook the cheesy taters for Liz's classroom feast tomorrow. I distinctly remember Matt saying he would handle the task, but he seems to have meant that I would do the cooking. Oh boy.

I don't hate cooking, I just don't love cooking. My mom was not a big chef or baker. From as far back as I can remember, Thanksgiving was purchased from Wyatt's and picked up the day prior. Mom would literally just warm it all up on Thanksgiving day. She thought I was oh so talented when I would make those Jello No Bake Cheesecakes. I mean, it wasn't exactly brain surgery, but my family loved them. I guess I inherited my lack of cooking from her.

I do make a mean sweet potato pie, but it just takes so much time and honestly, the one from the store taste just as good. My mom had the theory that it was homemade if it came from the grocery store. Her thought was that it was made in someones home, just not hers. She would always run to the store prior to a school event and buy cookies or cakes, run home and place them in her own container and present them as homemade. I will admit using that trick on more than one occasion.

This is my family's first major holiday since my grandfather's death. For reasons that are another blog for another day, I haven't spent a holiday at home for more than seven years, so it isn't that weird for me. My sister is taking it hard,  though. She has declined to attend the dinner at my uncle's home and plans on just spending the day with her girlfriend enjoying the day off. Honestly, she wouldn't have gone to my uncle's no matter what, yet another blog for another day. My uncle is only 18 months older than her and just 4 years older than me, so for most of our lives, we were more like siblings. He is a bit spoiled and can drive you crazy, so I understand her reasons quite well.

Last year was a big one for Emily. She had been out of the hospital following her heart surgery for less than a month. This year she is healthy (well, except for this weekend) and doing fantastic. People that don't see her but once a year are always surprised at how well she is doing. I can't wait for her to go down and dazzle them all with her charm.

Hope you all have a fantastic day.

I think it is funny how different people classify 'homemade' differently.  Some people would say a cherry pie that you bought a can of pie filling and a premade crust and combined them is homemade.  Others would very readily disagree.  I dont know why it really matters if something is homemade or not, as long as it tastes good (and wont kill you because of the salt and fat)!

I have always loved cooking and baking so this time of year always makes me excited b/c I can dazzle someone with my fine cooking skills. (teehee)
