  • CHD Awareness video *EDIT*

After countless attempts to load the video, I officially give up. If you have a moment, please take a look. Emily was that one out of one hundred born with a heart defect. Thankfully, she had a complete recovery following her repair at eight months old. Thanks!

    EDIT:

    Facts about CHDs:

Sometimes during early pregnancy, a baby’s heart fails to form properly, resulting in structural abnormalities known as Congenital Heart Defects. In most cases the cause in unknown.

Although some babies will be diagnosed at birth, sometimes the diagnosis is not made until days, weeks, months, or even years after. In some cases, CHDs are not detected until adolescence or adulthood.

Most people are unaware that Congenital Heart Defects are the most common birth defect in America, affecting approximately one in one hundred or 40,000 newborns each year. CHDs are responsible for one third off all birth defect-related deaths.

Congenital Heart Defects are the leading cause of all infant deaths in the United States. Twice as many children die from congenital heart defects, in the US, each year than from all forms of childhood cancer combined.

Each year over 1,000,000 babies are born worldwide with a congenital heart defect. 100,000 of them will not live to see their first birthday and thousands more die before they reach adulthood.

Additional funding is necessary for support and educational services, scientific research, and improved quality of care for children stricken with CHD. For more information about CHD visit The Children’s Heart Foundation at www.childrensheartfoundation.org.
