  • Bella emergency

This morning we left Bella and the puppies tucked away in Caleb's bed just before heading off to the graduation. Bella had seemed a bit out of sorts, but we just chalked it up to childbirth. We were gone about three hours and my first place to go is my room to check on the puppies. They were exactly where we left them, but Bella wasn't.

Bella ALWAYS comes when called. We began to call her thinking maybe she had just gotten out to do her business without us seeing her, but she wasn't coming. She normally is wearing her collar with tags, so I can hear them even went I can't see her. After her bath yesterday I hadn't put the collar back on. I couldn't even listen for that familiar jingle to locate her. We began making our way through the house and found Bella had gotten sick in the hallway. No Bella, just the aftermath of her illness. I began to get more than a bit freaked out.

After a quick sweep through the house we went back to our room to make a more thorough search. Nothing in our room or the dressing room. The puppies were sleeping so it was obvious Bella had been missing for too long. In the kitchen with no luck. Hallway; living room; kids bathroom; nothing. Liz's room with no luck. Jake and Josh's room showed signs she had been there, but no Bella. Finally; after more than half an hour of calling and looking; Matt found Bella in Whitney's closet. She wouldn't move or even wag her little tail for me.

I went and got her a piece of ham to entice her out, but she wouldn't even look at it. Something was very wrong. I carried her back into the room with the puppies and Matt got on the phone to the vet. Thankfully we were able to take her over as a walk in. Upon arrival we were told it might be as long as an hour before she was seen. My worry at that moment was for the puppies at home; but there was no way I was leaving without Bella being examined.

I had sat for about 20 minutes when the tech came over and said that it had been decided Bella needed to be seen immediately. The vet wanted to make sure there was no emergency situation and if Bella checked out okay on a quick exam; she would be brought back to me to wait until her place in line. I gave Bella a kiss and off she went with the tech. That was almost four hours ago and I haven't seen my Bella since.

They discovered that Bella had two other puppies that were stillborn and she had not been able to pass them properly. My poor baby was going into shock and if they didn't do an emergency surgery; we were going to lose her. I feel like the worst mommy in the world. I left my poor baby alone this morning while she was going through this horrible ordeal. We signed the paperwork and Bella was taken back immediately. We are lucky for quite a few reasons. The hospital we took her to happens to be one of the best in the area. People as far away as Arizona bring their animals here when they need cutting edge treatments. The owner of the clinic was the doctor that was going to perform her surgery; so I know Bella is in great hands.

I just received a call. My angel is out of surgery and doing well. She should be ready to come home tomorrow. I have not felt this emotionally drained since Emily was undergoing all of her medical treatments that first year. For now; Whitney and I are bottle feeding the puppies a special formula. It is unclear if Bella will be able to continue to nurse the puppies after she comes home. If not; I am ready and able to step in and take that burden off of her. Send my angel some special thoughts. She has had one tough day.
