Thank God, I am really not that old
Today I was having a discussion with April and Sarah (the hags). I mentioned something about Whitney's homecoming coming up and that she had no idea what I meant when I asked her about getting a mum. While I couldn't actually see the look on the hags faces, I can imagine they were looking at me like I was nuts. Neither of them had the slightest idea of what I was speaking.
Tonight in my quest to find them an actual picture of one, I discovered that it wasn't the fact that I was old and this was an outdated thing. Oh no you two drunk lovers of mine; it seems it is a regional thing done mainly in Texas and Oklahoma. Yes indeed, it is still a huge tradition and I am not near as old as I was feeling.
Here is a little example of what I was talking about. I received my first mum in seventh grade. I would have one each year until I graduated high school. It drove my teachers crazy. Traditionally, you wear these the day of the homecoming game to school and then that night at the game. People will often spend more time designing their mum than they will picking out their homecoming dress. The mums are done in your school colors and the ribbons represent whatever you choose. I always had something about drill team and my boyfriends name on there somewhere. Of course "Homecoming" whatever year (no, you will never get that out of me) would also be on the ribbons. As most things in Texas were; the bigger the better.
Having grown up in Texas where all things high school football are only a second to religion, I always assumed this was a nationwide thing. Apparently I was wrong. Mark that down because it doesn't happen often.
So, there ya go April and Sarah; a homecoming mum. Now, I will accept tequila as an apology for all those "old woman" comments I know you guys were making.
By the way, I love you guys more than a fat kid loves cake. You crack me up daily and I would be lost without both of you.

thats funny i had no idea what you were talking about earlier but makes since now.
@aidensmommy - LOL, I was seriously ready to check myself into a nursing home until I read that it was only a Texas/Okie thing. I now feel much better.
yeah, I never heard about that here and florida, then again i didnt go to a regular school in high school.
@Paul_Partisan@xanga - Well, now I have to ask; what kind of high school did you go to?
@gwacemom - an 'alternative' school.. it was 200 kids in size, public school but kids chose to go there instead of being districted to it, mostly punk and hippy kids when i was there.. just like a regular school in all other aspects, except we only had a basketball team, and if you wanted to you could play football at the high school you were zoned for.
I have no idea what a mum is, but I'm a CA girl born and raised, so that probably doesn't mean much. That tequila does sound good though. I'll bring the mix!
@Paul_Partisan@xanga - i wish i went to a schol that size for high school maybe i would have done more less distraction
@Paul_Partisan@xanga - Oh, my high school was much like that, only it was also my home school. We had over 5000 kids, but had specific "clusters" for those that wanted to focus on a certain career. We had kids all over Dallas that could petition to come and study computers, child development, etc. We had a full sports department though.
@lizheartshakespeare@xanga - At least now I don't feel so darn old. I am counting on that mix. LOL
@gwacemom - Strawberry or lime?
@lizheartshakespeare@xanga - Oh, I am a lime girl all the way.
Sorry, I've never heard of it either, but I'm an Ohioan. We're fairly boring here :) Of course you aren't old. You were talking about a mum not a muu muu ;-P
@gwacemom - YAY! I like both, but I'm having a serious lime craving at the moment.
*hands you some tequila* Oh, you are still old. *runs away*
See when you were talking 'mums' I thought you were talking about an actualy flower. I would die of laughter seeing the kids in the high schools around here wearing those!
Texans/Okies are weird!
@der_lila_Stern@xanga - LOL, we might be weird, but you love me. I am one of those rare ones that actually have Texas AND Okie blood. I am twice as weird.
BTW, that is an actual flower at the top. It is usually covered by a teddy bear or something, but there is a real live mum up in that mound of crap. LOL, I am homesick now.
LOL - I was literally just introduced to mums this weekend. Having grown up in the midwest, I had no idea of there existence. But, apparently they're a big deal here in east Texas. :) They have them on display at Michael's - there's even a full rack of teddy bears, ribbons, etc. to make them with.
I remember getting my first mum in 7th grade also and love this radition. I have always sent them to my sons girlfriends when they were in school hoping they enjoyed the tradition as much as I did. That is a photo of a beautiful mum.
Hahahaha, well I'm from Illinois so I have to admit I'd never heard of one either! Thank you for educating me!
@christygraves@xanga - Oh yes, they are huge in East Texas. That is where I am from. I was just shocked that no one had a clue what I was talking about because it was such a huge part of my high school years. Glad to hear the tradition is still alive and well back home.
@gwacemom - so what is the point of the flower if you cant actually see it?
@der_lila_Stern@xanga - You can see it, a little bit. LOL, don't ask me to explain the unexplainable. The mum itself is huge and you can still see it under the teddy bear decoration. It is all about the ribbons though.
Huh. *whips out the red Sharpie and scrawls, Ange was wrong. on the calendar before handing over the tequila* Remember not to mix that with your meds, granny... *runs away to bed*
@filtered_sunlight - LOL, and just where have you been all day little missy?
@gwacemom - Careful...I have lots of disgusting details on reserve that maybe shared if you get too demanding.
I have never heard of a homecoming mum.
@kidzsister1@xanga - Yeah, apparently it is only big in Texas and Oklahoma. Seeing that I grew up in East Texas, I was under the odd impression that everyone knew what the darn things were. I couldn't have been more wrong. LOL
